An international workshop entitled "3-D Signatures in Stellar Explosions" in honor of Prof. J. Craig Wheeler's 60th birthday will be held at The Omni Austin Hotel Downtown, June 10-13, 2003. During the last decade, advances in observational, theoretical and computational astronomy have provided new insights into the nature and physics of supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. Due to the extreme brightness of these events, they are expected to continue to play important roles in cosmology. SNe Ia provided good measurements of the Hubble constant both by statistical methods and theoretical models. SNe Ia have provided one of the strong arguments for a non-zero cosmological constant and will be used to probe the nature of the dark energy. In the future, core collapse supernovae may become the tool of choice to probe the very first generation of stars. GRBs may turn out be one of the few ways to study the end of the dark ages. Clearly, a better understanding of supernovae and GRBs is important. The multidimensional nature of these objects has been realized and it has become obvious that measurements of asymmetries and their understanding is a key for understanding of both supernovae and GRBs. This workshop will bring together experts from the fields of supernovae, GRBs and cosmology. The goals of this workshop are to make a critical assessment of the current status of the field and to evaluate the future directions.
The meeting will cover 4 days and provide ample time for discussion in the spirit of the Aspen workshops. We expect to have 20 invited and about 40 contributed talks of 30 and 15 minutes, respectively.
Proceedings from this workshop will be published. All contributions will be made available in electronic form on this webpage. Guidelines for submissions will be available here later.
Registration Fee: $200 (Please use registration form below)
Venue and Accomodations:
The workshop will be held at the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown, located at 700 San Jacinto at 8th Street, in the Longhorn room.
Please call 1-800-THE-OMNI (843-6664) or 512-476-3700 to reserve your room. Refer to Group Name "UT Department of Astronomy" and Meeting Name "3-D Signatures in Stellar Explosions" when making reservations. The room rate for this meeting is $119.00 per night for single or double, with an additional person charge of $20.00 per night. (Depending on the funding situation, we will provide some support for housing. Preference will be given to students and postdocs. )
REGISTRATION FORM: Since there will be a limited number of workshop participants (50), registration before February 15th is advised. Use the registration form below. Because of the limited space, we may not be able to accept late applications.
